How to Stay in Shape While Traveling
#1: Embrace a Bodyweight Fitness Routine
What’s great about simple exercises such as sit ups, push ups, planks, squats, and lunges, etc., is that you can do them literally anywhere – including your hotel room/vacation rental! Overall, the easiest way to stay in shape while traveling is to create a fitness plan with exercises like these.
The best thing to do in this scenario is to find what exercises you’re currently doing, and what you can do without a gym. This way, you can maintain what you’re already doing.
By taking exercises you already do, and then doing them in your hotel room, you can stay in shape while traveling!
#2: Take Advantage of Hotel Gyms
If you also want to include weightlifting so you don’t lose so much progress, try to find a gym with a fitness center. Or, if you’re staying in a place for a week or more, see if you can get a short-term gym membership or free trial!
#3: Run Around Your Destination
Running is not only good for burning fat and boosting your immune system, but also for exploring! You’ll cover ground much faster that you would as opposed to walking, and see more than you would by driving or cycling.
I’ve personally enjoyed running as a way to cover ground faster while exploring a new city. And if you’re already an avid runner in shape, this is a great way to not lose any progress, too!
By running to spots like this, you get excellent views!
#4: Don’t Overindulge on Junk Food
There’s more to staying in shape than just fitness. If you keep the junk food and fast food at a minimum, it’ll be so much easier to stay in shape as well! If you don’t pack on the unnecessary calories from the get-go, you won’t have to burn them off later. 😉
#5: Buy Groceries
Grocery stores and farmer’s markets are both excellent places to stock up on fresh produce. Skip the fast food and try eating fresh fruits, veggies, meats, and instead. You could even save money every day by simply preparing your own meals!
Another benefit: you know exactly what foods you’re putting into your body. By avoiding unhealthy food (just like #4), you’ll be able to stay in shape much more easily!
#6: Drink Plenty of Water Throughout the Day
Never underestimate the importance of drinking plenty of water throughout the day! In addition to (obviously) keeping you hydrated, it’ll help turn foods into energy, which in turn will help with your fitness. Overall, this is an incredibly simple, but very useful part of staying in shape while traveling!
#7: Get Good Sleep
A good night’s rest is yet another great way to keep your body healthy. By getting however much sleep you need to feel refreshed, you’ll much not only have an easier time working on your fitness, but also staying healthy, too!
#8: Walk Everywhere
What can beat a morning walk around a bustling city, wandering through farmer’s markets, or perhaps grabbing some breakfast from a bakery? Best of all, getting your 10,000 steps (give or take 🙂 ) will most certainly burn calories and keep you in shape!
Besides, walking will give you a new perspective of a city that you would miss by driving, biking, or taking public transit.
#9: Embrace physical activities
Maybe you’re going on a beach vacation and want to give surfing a try, or perhaps you’re going to the mountains and want to try rock climbing. Embracing physical activities while traveling is an excellent way to stay in shape! Plus, it gives you the opportunity to try something new, which is always a good thing.
See, staying in shape while traveling is nowhere as difficult as it may seem! Getting a little workout in your hotel room, walking or running, eating healthy, staying hydrated, and getting good sleep pretty much sum it up.
