Day #2: San Antonio
You’ll want to spend the morning and early afternoon exploring San Antonio Missions National Historical Park, which is a series of 4 historic missions dating to to Spanish-era Texas. From north to south, there is Mission Concepción, Mission
Spend the late afternoon exploring the historic Alamo, a Spanish-built mission and iconic site of the Texas Revolution. Inside the Alamo and in the surrounding grounds is a museum with weapons used during the conflict, history tidbits, and more.
Day #3: Day Trip to the Hill Country; end in Austin
After exploring San Diego, you’ll want to take a day trip up to the Hill Country for a slower pace. Some interesting places to visit are Fredericksburg, just an hour or so from San Antonio. There you’ll find the cities unique German heritage as well as the National Museum of the Pacific War, with different WWII exhibits.
Day #4: Austin
For the fourth day of your Texas road trip, you’ll have a full day to explore Austin. Texas’ capital is quite a bit different from San Antonio, and there is plentiful bbq and live music venues.
Some things you can’t miss are the Congress Street bats at sunset, exploring the cathedral of junk, walking along the boardwalk at Lady Bird Lake, and so much more.
Day #5: Austin – Dallas (3 1/2 hours)
Driving from Austin to Dallas should take 3 1/2 hours without any stops, give or take. Of course Austin’s notoriously bad traffic may affect that, so plan accordingly.
Along the way, you could stop in Waco and swing by Vitek’s BBQ, an excellent joint I absolutely recommend. Also, soda fans will enjoy exploring the Dr Pepper Museum.
After Waco, and before reaching Dallas, you may also want to swing by the small town of West, which is famous for Czech immigration and ‘Kolaches’, and excellent treat I know you’ll love.
Day #6: Explore Dallas
Exploring Dallas will be one of the most fun days on your one week road trip through Texas. Here you have a multitude of things to see and do, including exploring the hip Deep Ellum neighborhood, which has the tasty BBQ restaurant Pecan Lodge.

When it comes to packing for Texas, think about the activities you want to do, and plan around that. This itinerary focuses mainly on exploring cities and towns, so some casual outfits and comfortable walking shoes would be useful.
Normally, I’d recommend the following:

Khaki shorts / jeans
Comfortable walking shoes

This isn’t Seattle or Boston, so dressing up isn’t going to be as much of a deal. Thankfully, you can pack more for comfort if traveling to Texas.
